City Will Consider New Firehall

Vernon Fire RescueThe city of Vernon will consider a new firehall in Bella Vista in it's upcoming budget discussions.  Residents of Canadian Lakeview Estates have renewed their call for better fire protection in a presentation to city council, saying the  response time of 14 to 20 minutes is well off the 9 minutes recommended for most other areas of the city.  Mayor Wayne Lippert tells KISS FM, acquiring land for a fire station  is one of the key issues.  "Council will consider it in this budget process and we'll try to find a way to start addressing those issues. I believe the land purchase will be a significant first step, trying to find out where it is, and where to put it."  Lippert says the actual building for a volunteer hall is not that much.  "it could be something pretty basic, like a tin garage for example to put a truck in, and we could have a used fire truck that would could take from one of our main halls possibly, like we did with Predator Ridge." Canadian Lakeview Estates neighborhood president Isabel Furtado says due to their distance from a firehall, home insurance options are very limited and very costly in their area.

Why is that the people who live in expensive houses and areas, complain about the cost of living in same.

Most houses in the Canadian Lakeview Estates have values of $800,000 +.

Insurance is readily available in this area with the following financial constraints:

1. Lowest rate is for a house that is withing 300 metres of a fire hydrant.

2. Medium rate - 25% surcharge for a house that is with 8-13 Kms of a fire hall.

3. Highest rate - 40-50% surcharge for a house that is in an unprotected area.

Therefore if you chose to live in any of these areas, that is your decision and the general taxpayer should not subsidize your level of living.

HEY Robert, You wouldn't happen to have a grudge against a Professional Fire Department would you? Just a Hunch. I am glad your home and family live in fire proof homes where a 35 minute response is adequate as mine does not!! Insurance is for contents, not lives..... I think that you are confused by the meaning of Priceless!! it means valuable, not worthless.... Can't wait to hear what words of wisdom and negativity you have in future blogs...... good for you!!
