Coldstream To Credit Sewer Ratepayers - Council holds back some funding for reserves, backup meter

Lots of debate at Coldstream council this week and finally a decision to credit 50-thousand dollars to sewer customers in their 4th quarter billing. It follows a 118-thousand dollar refund from the City of Vernon following an apparent error in billing. Councillor Maria Besso says she didn't want the other 50-thousand to be put into the sewer reserve fund but was convinced in the end.  ``Council had all along said it would like to replenish the reserve again (and) that would have meant the rates would have to be translated into next year,'' explains Besso. ``It's a pay me now or pay me later kind of thing.'' The councillor says 18-thousand dollars is to be spent on a backup flow meter to ensure that such costly mistakes won't happen again. ``It's caused us alot of grief,'' admits Besso. ``Unexpected rate increases in the middle of the year are not the way that our administration would like the utility run.''
