An agency that provides hot meals to those in need could get a helping hand from taxpayers. The City of Vernon’s finance committee is currently investigating whether a grant could be available to the Upper Room Mission for its kitchen expansion. “They want to serve more people,” said Coun. Patrick Nicol. The mission is trying to raise between $100,000 and $150,000 to increase the kitchen space, which currently includes two regular stoves and two sinks. Staff and volunteers serve about 250 meals a day. Nicol says the mission is assisting those residents who need help the most. “It’s a place where people can go, get warm and get a meal,” he said. “I go in there and I’m uplifted by how everyone feels.”
Residents can also get on board through Aviva Insurance’s community fund, which is seeking worthwhile organizations across the country to support. You can go to www.avivacommunityfund.org/ideas/acf7285 and vote for the Upper Room Mission. You can vote daily for 10 days. “Hopefully everyone will vote for them,” said Coun. Bob Spiers. “The entire $100,000 could be won by everyone in Vernon voting for them.”

If Council really wants to get into the business of feeding the disadvantaged, why don't they get some sweat equity in return?
Van der Zalm said it years ago and got lambasted for it, but give the welfare recipients a shovel and put 'em to work for their cheque is an idea that is right for today. Some form of contribution back to the society that they are getting freebies from makes sense.
I'll second that!
More provincial downloading on local taxpayers with a council that can not give our money away quick enough
