Politicians celebrated the opening of the 29-million dollar Duteau Creek water treatment plant on Friday. MLA Eric Foster was Mayor of Lumby when they met with the province to talk funding. He says it has been a need for 30 years. Vernon Mayor Wayne Lippert says the plant was the number one request for years and the entire North Okanagan backed the idea when the province asked what the priority for the area was. There was a lot of talk about how safe the water is now, but most residents have noticed it's gone from yellow to clear. Coldstream Mayor Jim Garlick says he can now wear white shirts. Garlick says instead of calls of complaint about the water, residents are actually calling to say how much better it is. The real test of the new plant will be during high demand next summer. The next phase is to work on separating agricultural and domestic water use before a filtration plant in 2015.
