Surprise Result From Vernon-to-UBCO Campus Survey - 49 percent of users from Vernon, rest from outside city

A survey of the ridership on the two North Okanagan-to-UBC-O buses has found that just under half the ridership is from Vernon (49 percent), according to City staff. Staff from the BC Transit and the City of Vernon spent a week on the two buses talking to students and getting their postal codes. Mayor Wayne Lippert is hoping the results will convince other jurisdictions to help contribute to the cost of the buses. ``This truly is a regional function that everybody should be looking at because its their residents who are using it and it would be nice to get their assistance in the funding,'' says the mayor. Lippert is hoping the postal code results will convince Electoral Area C rep Mike MacNabb to join the (NORD) transit function and help pay for the buses. He is also hoping Coldstream council will put some money in future budgets for the 2nd UBC-O bus.

As a resident of Area C, I suggest that riders who are not from the City of Vernon should pay a higher fare.

Since when did we become a nanny state that we have to subsidize students. If they wish to travel to UBC in Kelowna that is their choice.
