The proposed sports facility next to Okanagan College, is expected to be discussed by Coldstream council tonight. Mayor Jim Garlick expects his council will be supportive of sending the issue to a referendum. "I've been telling then (council) what's been happening with these negotiations all the way through, and explaining what we intend to do, so I'd been surprised if somebody suddenly decides to get real upset about it." Garlick says there may be concerns with using the ten acres of farm land for the track and field facility. "What we want to do is make a net benefit for agriculture out of this, and that's why we're supporting this project here with the community farm at the college." Garlick sees the plan for a 7.8 million dollar track and field facility as a "catalyst" for getting making things happening at the college, similar to what Penticton has done with its Ok College campus. The mayor says tying the proposal to farming programs through the college, should make it more acceptable to the agricultural land commission which also has to give approval. NORD has signed a 40 year lease with the land owner, Okanagan College, for $1 a year, to allow development to proceed. If approved in a referendum at a date to be determined, the average homeowner would have to pay an extra $17 a year, for 20 years, to cover the cost of the facility.
