The federal government will be hearing from the City of Terrace about rising police costs. That's after city council heard the news it could be paying $125,000 more next year for its share of officers attached to the RCMP detachment here. The letter comes at the urging of the Union of BC Municipalities, which is involved with the police negotiations and is requesting the municipalities' support. It's asking local governments to write to their local MPs, the federal minister of public safety and the president of the federal Treasury Board. The Union of BC Municipalities is worried that as police costs increase, some municipalities won't be able to afford their share. The city now pays 70 per cent of policing costs with the province paying the other 30 per cent. Police pensions, equipment and clothing, patrol car equipment and adding video cameras are playing a part as expenses rise.

Don Quixote Note:
The 2010 stats for Terrace indicate that Terrace has 25 RCMP members so if the $125,000 is correct than a per member cost would be $5000 (at a 70%) rate. A 90 rate for Vernon would indicate a per member cost pf (5000*9/7 =
$6429. Vernon's authorized strength is 60 while its billable figure is about 52 so Vernon's additional cost will be 52 x 6429 =
$334,308.
