Firefighter Talks

Attention: open in a new window.
Contract talks between the city of Vernon and its unionized firefighters are expected to flare-up this spring.  City administrator Leon Gous  says the current deal has expired, but the city is waiting for the new fire chief to be hired, and for the outcome of negotiations in the Lower Mainland.  Gous says wage parity with firefighters at the coast, is always a key issue.  The smoke-eaters got a 13.5 percent wage hike in their last 3 year deal.  Meantime, the administrator says up to 40 people have applied for the Vernon fire chief's job.  Gous says a short list will be the next step, and a decision on the new hire could be made by the end of February.
