VANCOUVER - Press Release
With Christy Clark as the new leader of the Liberal Party, free enterprise voters in B.C. need to look for a new home, and that new home is the BC Conservative Party. "Christy Clark's election as Liberal leader marks the end of the B.C. Liberal Party as the brand under which free-enterprise voters can unite," says Keith Roy, Official Spokesperson of the BC Conservative Party. "For three straight elections, centre and centre-right voters were united behind the leadership of Premier Campbell. With Christy Clark as the new Liberal leader, this coalition is now over." Christy’s desire for the top job has overshadowed what a real leader should do. Her campaign was devoid of ideas, vision and policies. The BC Liberal party caucus lined up against her and supported her opponents. Current and former colleagues bit their tongues about whether they would stay and work with her. Fellow leadership candidates spoke disparagingly about her. “British Columbians have no idea where the next Premier stands on any of the major issues of the day,” said Wayne McGrath, President of the BC Conservative Party. During the course of her campaign, Christy has shown British Columbians that she only wants to be Premier for the sake of being Premier. Christy refused to commit to staying involved in provincial politics if she couldn’t get the top job. Christy has called for an election as early as fall 2011 and as late as spring 2013 - even though she voted for fixed election dates when she was part of Gordon Campbell’s cabinet. Christy’s first stance on the HST was to ignore the will of over 600,000 British Columbians who signed the referendum petition. Then she wanted a free vote in the legislature to decide the fate of the tax. Now, she supports the referendum. “I’ve lost track of how many positions Christy Clark has managed to hold on the HST in the last 3 months alone,” said Keith Roy, Official Spokesperson for the BC Conservative Party. “
Despite her clear status as the front runner, the BC Liberal Caucus largely ignored Christy’s leadership bid, instead supporting other candidates. “I think Ms. Clark will have a tough time finding qualified people who want to sit in her cabinet,” said Wayne McGrath. “It’s pretty tough to run a government with people who campaigned against you and only one caucus member supported you.” “The coalition is dead,” declared Keith Roy. “British Columbians who are looking for common sense government, greater accountability and more choice are welcome in the BC Conservative Party.”
