A Resiliency Centre is opening in Vernon to assist people affected by the devastating apartment fire on Friday, February 25. The Canadian Red Cross and other agencies are supporting the City of Vernon in the operation of the centre and other services which assist people as they work to rebuild their lives. Trained Red Cross personnel will meet with each resident and household to determine what they need to enable a return to self-sufficiency. The process will help ensure that no resident suffers gaps in the provision of their basic needs once initial emergency assistance (72 hours) provided by local authorities is concluded. Experience indicates that the length of time for recovery will vary for each person. "Compassion and generosity are the hallmarks of the people of Vernon", says John Richey, Operations Manager for the Red Cross in the Southern Interior. "The task ahead is to ensure sufficient and ongoing support to people impacted by the fire. We are committed to working together with the community and providing support to the recovery efforts", added Richey.
The Red Cross is not able to accept donations of goods. Financial contributions are greatly appreciated as they provide the most flexible and efficient way of helping those in need. Assistance provided by Red Cross will not duplicate assistance provided through insurance, government or other agencies. Individuals, groups and organizations wishing to help are encouraged to make a financial donation through the Red Cross. Financial donations in support of local Red Cross efforts can be made by calling 1-800-661-3308, or in person at the Red Cross HELP depot in Vernon (2809, 44th Avenue, tel. 250 545 3111, open on weekdays 9am - 1pm) and at your local Red Cross office. Please make your cheque or money order to "The Canadian Red Cross" and identify on the cheque or money order that it is for the: "B.C. Response Fund- Vernon Fire."
