City of Vernon staff will be patrolling 31st Avenue, hoping to convince businesses along five blocks in the downtown core to vote in favour of a proposed revitalization project that will add trees and street lighting. Shop fronts are being asked to contribute funds to pay for street furniture and other items, although the City plans to pick up the tab for much of the work.
Meanwhile, city council has stepped in to save a beautification project on 30th Avenue, just by the new Nixon-Wenger and library buildings. It includes removing ugly utility polls and overhead lines around that area. Councillor Mary-Jo O'Keefe says the 932-thousand dollar project was in danger of failing because business, Hydro and local government contributions were short by just under $133,000. ``I know it sounds like a small amount of money...but we were going to lose an investment of 900-thousand,'' says O'Keefe. ``That's what I was worried about.'' Council is taking money from reserves to cover the shortfall.
