One of CIty Hall's Go To Staff is Retiring - Bailey plans international travel and recreation

After 33 years of service to the City of Vernon, Marg Bailey, one of City Hall’s best known community assets, is retiring.  Hired in 1978, Marg’s rise through the ranks was not only meteoric, (she was appointed  City Clerk within two years) but her knowledge and experience in municipal government increased exponentially with each position, ultimately making her a valuable asset to City politicians and the community. She now retires as Manager of Administrative Services and Deputy Chief Administrative Officer, the position she has held for the past 5 and a half years. Leon Gous, CAO, who has worked closely with Marg in recent years went further by noting that “The knowledge Marg takes with her is irreplaceable and we will all miss her. I wish her all the best as she begins the next phase of her life.” During her tenure, Marg has served seven mayors and councils and has enjoyed her working relationships with staff and politicians alike. Bailey says, “What I am most grateful for is the lasting friendships I have made -both staff members and politicians, and even though many are no longer at City Hall, we are still great friends and always will be.” Mayor Wayne Lippert says I speak for everyone at City Hall when I say that Marg has been a great role model to everyone. Her knowledge of City history and municipal government is encyclopedic. This has made her the “go to” person for politicians, co-corkers and the community alike. Those of us who work with her know her for her integrity, discretion and complete professionalism. We will truly miss her.

Bailey says the highlights of her career include the 1992 Winter Games, the Centennial celebrations, organizing and hosting two UBCM Annual  Conferences and Queen Elizabeth’s visit to Vernon in 1983.  She is also proud of introducing automated voting machines for the municipal election in 1999, something that current election staff is profoundly grateful for. Asked what hasn’t changed at City Hall in 33 years and Marg laughs and says, “The water issue!”
