B.C. premier announces May 11 byelection

B.C. Premier Christy Clark has called a byelection — in which she plans to run — for the riding of Vancouver-Point Grey on May 11.  Clark made the announcement Wednesday afternoon in her Vancouver office.  She announced Monday that she intended to seek the B.C. Liberal nomination in the riding.  Clark is a former MLA who quit her Vancouver-area seat after nine years in 2005. She won the B.C. Liberal leadership Feb. 26 and was sworn in as premier March 14.  The Vancouver-Point Grey riding, in the city's generally affluent West Side, was held by former Premier Gordon Campbell, who resigned as an MLA March 15.  B.C. Civil Liberties Association executive director David Eby announced later Wednesday that he would seek the New Democratic Party nomination in Vancouver-Point Grey.
Eby, a lawyer and outspoken civil libertarian, said he would step down from his position with the BCCLA to contest the election.
