Three Vernon teens out for an evening hike Tuesday ran into more than they bargained for. The girls, all 18, were hiking on trails in Kal Lake Provincial Park when they encountered a black bear on the trail. RCMP Cpl. Gerry Kovacs says the bear would not leave the area and the girls felt uneasy. "That’s when they placed a call to the Vernon RCMP who established contact with the hikers by cell phone and made their way into the trails locating the trio and escorted them safely out of harms way," says Kovacs. "Police would like to warn the public that spring is here and as we venture out into our parks and recreation spots so are the bears. Be alert and Be safe. Prepare yourself to deal with these types of incidents when you are in bear habitat."
