Fire Restrictions To Be Put In Place Mid-Month - Salmon Arm not yet affected but Vernon under ban

'Tis the season for fire. Starting May 15th, open fire restrictions are being put in place within most of the boundaries of the Kamloops Fire Centre. The restrictions will remain in place until October 15th. Fire Information Officer, Kayla Pepper says the ban specifically prohibits the burning of any waste, slash or other material, stubble or grass, or the use of fireworks or burning barrels. Pepper says much of the region already has a `moderate' fire danger rating. She says there were 10 fires burning over 100 hectares of land just last week even though we've gone through a cooler spring than normal. The ban does not apply to campfires a half metre high by a half metre wide or to cooking stoves that use gas, propane, or briquettes. The only areas exempt from the ban are the Clearwater and Salmon Arm fire zones.
