Mayor Sizes Up Prison Bid

Lumby's main competition for a prison could come from First Nations bids.  Kevin ActonSo says mayor Kevin Acton who's had a chance to asses several of the five bids into the province, including from the Penticton and Osoyoos Indian Bands.  "They probably have a pretty good shot at it, just as good as Lumby. I know Clarence (Louie, from Osoyoos Band) gave a speech at SILGA (municipal association) and they put a pretty good plan together, so it will be interesting to see where the government goes on that." Acton (pictured) doesn't know much about Summerland's plan, but he feels Penticton's chances will be hurt by holding a binding referendum after the province plans to make its decision.  "I really can't see the province offering it to Penticton just to have Penticton turn it down, so I think we're ahead of the game there, for sure."  Penticton residents vote on the prison issue June 18. Solicitor General Shirley Bond says a decision a site for a 360 cell minimum security prison should be made by mid June.
