Following in Lumby's footsteps, Penticton will now hold a referendum on a proposed correctional facility. The only difference is Penticton's referendum will be binding.Penticton Council made that decision Tuesday evening. Mayor Dan Ashton says the electorate will be asked the following question: "Do you approve of a provincial correctional centre being constructed and operated within Penticton City limits?" Ashton says the vote will be held at the SOEC Saturday, June 18. Rich Coleman, at the time the Solicitor General, announced late last year the province was planning to build a correctional facility in the interior by 2015. Coleman asked interested municipalities to respond by April 30 of this year. That deadline has now passed. Ashton says he has informed the Ministry of the city's decision but has yet to hear back. Those who are eligible to vote include Penticton residents and those who own property within city limits. It will cost roughly $50,000 to hold the referendum, which has now been included in the 2011 budget. Lumby Council voted Monday in favour of pursuing the 360 cell facility.
