Report Revenue neutral? Nope: HST will cost families an extra $350 a year, says report

SUSAN LAZARUK, The Province May 4, 2011
British Columbian families will have to decide if paying about a dollar a day more in sales tax will be worth strengthening the economy and making B.C. more competitive in the global economy years down the road.  That’s the conclusion of an independent panel, led by former Alberta Finance Minister Jim Dinning, asked by the province to review and analyze the positives and negatives of the HST and the PST/GST.  At a news conference called to release the report, It’s Your Decision, Dinning said the panel determined the HST implemented last July is costing families about $350 a year more in sales tax because services previously exempt from the PST are no longer tax-free under the HST. That includes restaurant meals, haircuts, gym memberships and other athletic fees, real estate and renovations.
