The general manager of the Historic O'Keefe Ranch will be seeking a councillors spot on Vernon council in November.
Catherine
Lord -- who is a certified general accountant -- says there is a true
need to exercise fiscal restraint, and for the city to tighten its belt. "The demands for increase in public services have to be balanced with
the taxpayers ability to pay. Infrastructure improvements, particularly
roads, are a high priority, and the needs of pedestrians, cyclists and
personal use vehicles must be carefully balanced." The 35 year resident of the city who lives in Okanagan Landing, says
she's also interested in transportation planning, and says the city
needs to work better with RDNO and other jurisdictions. "The key to any successful relationship is cooperation and negotiation." Lord spent 19 years working in local government as the finance
director in Coldstream, and before that as deputy finance director with
Vernon. She is in her third year as the Ranch's GM. The official nomination period for candidates is October 4th to the 14th.

She's an accountant and Catherine Lord
admits her first priority in running for Vernon city council will be
finances. The O'Keefe Ranch general manager is taking a leave of absence
over the next couple of months to run for city government. The election
takes place in November. Lord says her second priority is
transportation. ``There has to be a real nice balance between the
pedestrians, the cyclists and the cars because we're going to have cars
around for a number of years,'' says Lord. She says water, and Vernon's
relationship with the regional district over it, is another priority.

Great to see Ms Lord throw her hat into the ring, but too bad she is not running for Mayor!!!
"The needs of pedestrians, cyclists and personal use vehicles needs to be balanced" What does she mean by this?Hopefully she means that in the last couple of years that it was not balanced and that too much was spent on 20th street etc. We need clear talk from anyone running for mayor or council.
I wonder how many of the people - seeking to become or who are Councilers and Mayors really know what is expected of them - I refer to the thing called -- Fiduciary Duty -- fiduciary duty is the highest standard of care at either equity or law. A fiduciary (abbreviation fid) is expected to be extremely loyal to the person to whom he owes the duty (the "principal"): he must not put his personal interests before the duty, and must not profit from his position as a fiduciary, unless the principal consents.
When a fiduciary duty is imposed, equity requires a stricter standard of behavior than the comparable tortuous duty of care at common law. It is said the fiduciary has a duty not to be in a situation where personal interests and fiduciary duty conflict, a duty not to be in a situation where his fiduciary duty conflicts with another fiduciary duty, and a duty not to profit from his fiduciary position without express knowledge and consent. A fiduciary ideally would not have a conflict of interest. It has been said that fiduciaries must conduct themselves "at a level higher than that trodden by the crowd" and that "the distinguishing or overriding duty of a fiduciary is the obligation of undivided loyalty."
