Merchants Protest on 43rd Ave

A protest march is being held in Vernon today, and it is expected to have an impact on the city's busiest road.  A group of business reps from the north end will be on 43rd Avenue at the Highway 97 intersection for a noon hour rally today.  Harald Kober, owner of Roko Service, says it's all about the city's proposal to reduce 43rd Ave from the current four lanes to three, which city staff say will make it safer and create new space for cyclists.  Some of the merchants say it will have a negative impact on their business. Kober says they will be slowing down traffic in the protest area including on the highway by Vernon Square, as a way of making a statement.  Mayor Wayne Lippert says no decision has been made on the idea, adding it's expected to be on council's agenda Tuesday October 11th.
