Vernon's
mayor is onside with the province, calling an RCMP contract provided by
Ottawa ``unacceptable.'' Wayne Lippert says the force gets more and
more expensive yet won't account for some of those costs. ``An
alternative will be a provincial police force,'' suggests Lippert. The
mayor says the City may even take another look at the possibility of a
municipal force. The RCMP contract expires next year. Although alot
of mayors don't like it, Wayne Lippert says he's open to the idea of a
municipal auditor general. Community Minister Ida Chong has had a tough
time selling the idea to other politicians during the UBCM convention in
Vancouver. But Lippert says it could be a good thing. ``Certainly
around Vernon, there's alot of people asking about value-for-money
audits and that's essentially what this would do,'' he says. Lippert
says it might save the municipality the hefty sum it would cost to
conduct a core review of City expenditures. That's something Councillor
Bob Spiers has been pushing.
