Officer choked, man in jail

A 42-year-old Kelowna man is behind bars after allegedly assaulting and threatening to kill an RCMP officer during a traffic stop early Sunday morning.  According to Const. Steve Holmes, Mounties attempted to pull over a Grey Chevy pick-up heading north on Highway 33 about 1:15 Sunday morning.  Despite the use of emergency equipment, Holmes says the vehicle continued on its journey until a second police cruiser pulled in front of it and brought it to a stop near Springfield Road. "The driver refused to provide his driver's license or comply with any of the officer's requests," says Holmes. "He was arrested for obstruction but fought back violently by punching and trying to choke the arresting officer."  Holmes says the driver, Troy Brad, is accused of attempting to pull an officer into his vehicle. After the officer was able to back away, Holmes says the man got out of the vehicle and went after the officer.  "The driver uttered death threats against the officer on numerous occasions and refused to provide breath samples during the impaired investigation."  Holmes says Brad appeared before a Justice and was remanded to appear in court Monday. He faces charges of obstruction, resisting arrest, impaired driving, refusal to provide a breath sample, flight from police and uttering threats. Brad is currently before the courts on similar charges.  In March of 2009, Brad was arrested and charged with Care or Control of a vehicle while impaired, failure or refusal to provide a breath sample and two counts of willfully resisting/obstructing a peace officer. That case will be heard November 24.
