Far fewer homeless camps are being found
in the Vernon area. Community policing co-ordinator Rachel Zubick says
eleven people were found camping rough in four locations during a check
by social service agencies and bylaw officers late last week. Zubick
says it's a far cry from the 30-plus camps found in 2009. She says the
community's success is down to joint efforts to get the word out. Reps
from the Gateway Shelter, the John Howard Society and mental health
experts also took part in the homeless survey. Zubick says social
service agencies have made great strides in housing the more troubled
members of the community. She says those are the ones who have
behavioural problems, addictions or mental health issues.
