The North Okanagan-Columbia-Shuswap Regional Hospital District has approved its 2012 provisional budget. The financial plan includes a tax increase of 3.5 per cent, bringing the total tax requisition to $5,316,328. This is up from last year’s total by $180,195. Treasurer Peter Jarman says the 3.5 per cent increase is close to the inflation rate. “What does that mean for the average taxpayer? The residential tax would increase from $62.01 to $64.19 on an average residence of $308,817,” he said. The taxes raised by NOCSRHD pay for 40 per cent of all hospital capital projects and equipment within the North Okanagan and Columbia-Shuswap regional districts. Jarman said the increase is tied to property assessments so the actual hike will vary slightly from area to area. Jarman said this provisional budget was altered slightly to include a budget item request from the Lumby Health Services Society of $3,054 for a portable procedure light to assist their local physicians and dermatologist. The numbers for the provisional budget are determined by the operating and capital requirements of the year.
