Remembering RCMP's history at war

The history of the RCMP is not tied solely to theThe history of the RCMP is not tied solely to the enforcement of law in Canada, but to her continued Sovereignty in the face of several wars.  Many members of the RCMP and her predecessors, the Northwest Mounted Police and the Royal Northwest Mounted Police, have served in foreign conflicts dating back to 1899 and the South African War where 250 members served.  As a result of their achievements in that war, King Edward VII conferred the "Royal" to the Northwest Mounted Police in 1904. Members of the Royal Northwest Mounted Police have since served in both the Great War (I) and the World War (II)  and were awarded battle honours that are displayed on the Force's battle flag or Guidon.  Members of the RCMP continue to serve alongside Canada's armed forces in areas such as Haiti, Bosnia, and Afghanistan where two Kelowna members, Inspector Paul Driscoll and Constable Amadeo Vecchio, are currently posted.  History has taken a long, arduous journey from the fields of Flanders to the current theatres of war.  It has witnessed much sadness and horror but has also seen much bravery and honour in the hearts of those who were willing to lay down their tomorrows for our today. Let us remember those who have fallen with thankfulness and sincerity and those who remain, with gratitude and the hope of a speedy return home.
