Mayoral candidates from Vernon and Coldstream were
invited to the Vernon Art Gallery to discuss their commitment to the
arts. The Vernon Art Gallery, which is looking for a financial
commitment from the next local government, held the function Thursday
night. Candidates got a chance to address the crowd on the issue of funding the city’s arts programs. Provincial
funding cuts and lower fundraising dollars have left the Vernon Art
Gallery Board with two pressing needs: staff funding from the Regional
District and money for a new building. A plan for both objectives is already in development but the organization wants a mayor who will follow through. “We
know what we want. We know what we need. It’s going to take a very
serious commitment from the local government,” said Marion Morrison from
the Vernon Art Gallery. Morrison is optimistic about the future,
saying she is hopeful the new art gallery will be built and ready for
occupancy in 2015. The official mayoral candidates for the City of Vernon are Wayne Lippert, Patrick Davies and Robert Sawatzky.
