Grade 11 and 12 students thinking about a career in police work, are being encouraged to check out the Jean Minguy Memorial Youth Academy in Vernon.  The week long program is held at the Army Camp and run by RCMP officers. Vernon RCMP Constable Steven Schenkeveld took the course in 2001 while attending Charles Bloom Secondary in Lumby.  He told the media, "It gives them a foundation for what the depot life is going to be like for six months. They're only getting a little glimpse of it, but it's definitely an eye opener. You don't get that from a video, it's actual hands-on experience."  Constable Kathy Szoboticsanec says the application process is stringent. "They go through a series of questions and they have to talk about  themselves, why they want to do this, as well as a fitness test, so it's a process that once they've gone through those hoops, it certainly is rewarding."  Next year's camp will run from April 29 to May 5 at the Army Camp.   Fourty students from around the Okanagan are picked for the course. You can get more details on the School District 22 website.
