Royal Canadian Mint Introduces a New Generation of One-Dollar and Two-Dollar Circulation Coins

Ottawa, Ontario, April 10, 2012 — The Royal Canadian Mint is pleased to announce that a new generation of one-dollar and two-dollar circulation coins, which incorporate advanced security features and are manufactured with the Mint's patented multi-ply plated steel technology begins circulating today.  More cost-effective than their predecessors and unprecedented in their security, these new coins retain the "Common Loon" and "Polar Bear" designs and physical appearance familiar to millions of Canadian consumers and businesses.  Existing one-dollar and two-dollar coins remain legal tender and will continue to circulate alongside this new generation of circulation coins.

Don Quixote Note: There is $77,000 in the Vernon 2012 budget to cover the costs of programing and converting the Cities Parking Meters to accept these new coins. Some Vending machines in the local area may have to be reprogrammed to accept these lighter weight new coins. All old coins remain in use and are still legal tender.

Trail Daily Times Todd Stevens, the City of Trail’s parking meter attendant, began upgrading the ticket dispensing units to match the newly weighted loonies and toonies introduced this spring by the Royal Canadian Mint. He expects to update between 700 and 750 meters in downtown Trail in the next two days.
