Think history is boring. Think again. The Greater Vernon Museum will hold an open house Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. “See live demonstrations of Captain Shorts’ original steam engine from 1886,” said curator Ron Candy. “At the print shop, have your name printed out by the museum’s operating linotype machine and flat bed press.” Check out the progress being made on the restoration of the original 1912 tower clock from Vernon’s old post office. The clock is now running and keeping time in the museum. “Want to learn more about the Okanagan Valley’s fresh water supply?” said Candy.
“Take some time to see the museum’s latest exhibit, A Drop in the Bucket. This temporary in-house exhibit reveals some startling truths about our water.” Tours of the museum’s military displays and natural history areas will be available or take a behind the scenes look at the archives and research facility. Original paintings by Vernon artists Allan Brooks, Baroness Herry, Tommy Brayshaw, Janet Middleton, Charles Holliday, and Howard Totenhofer are on exhibit, along with pottery by Axel Ebring and argillite carvings from Haida Gwaii. “Ever see a 1.4 million year-old mammoth tooth? We have one,” said Candy. Refreshments will be provided and admission is by donation. The museum is located at 3009 32nd Ave.
