Vernon's elected reps have some questions about the city's proposed new anti idling bylaw. Council gave the bylaw three readings Monday, meaning it's one step
from final approval, but fines are not expected to start until next
year. Councillor Bob Spiers has concerns about how it will be enforced. "It should only be enforced in the non parking zones and the back
alleys of Vernon. I hope we don't see bylaw officers walking up and down
residential streets." Councillor Cathrine Lord wonders about the bylaw around schools,
where parents are dropping off, or picking up kids in the middle of
winter.
Spiers led a motion to extend the time limit when a driver could be issued a $250 dollar fine for idling. It was three minutes, but was changed to five, which Spiers says is what other cities with similar bylaws do.

This is a make work project for the Bylaw department and/or a revenue grab by the City, nothing more.
