Mayes Talks Pot and Retirement

The M-P for Okanagan Shuswap says all the talk about legalizing marijuana this summer has not changed his stance on the issue. Colin Mayes says he can't support a drug he feels is a health hazard. "Marijuana has been proven to be hazardous to human health. The marijuana they smoked 20 to 25 years ago is a lot different that what's smoked today. They have traced it to schizophrenia and other mental disorders," Mayes tells Kiss FM. Mayes says there may be more discussion this fall about the idea for issuing fines instead of criminal charges, for possessing small amounts of pot. Meantime, the veteran M-P says he should know later this fall if he will be staying -- or leaving -- federal politics. Mayes has represented the region in Ottawa since 2006. The 65 year old says the next election is still two years away, but he wants to decide by November. "I'm healthy and I enjoy the job, so it's a hard decision. You wonder how much time you have on the planet and you want to have a little bit of time for retirement and doing some of those things on your bucket list," says Mayes. The Conservative from Salmon Arm has been elected three times.
