A local group has no shortage of ideas of ways to improve recreational facilities in Greater Vernon. The Ribbons of Green Trails Society has presented local politicians with their plan for the next 20 years. Greater Vernon Advisory Committee chair Mike Macnabb says the plan outlines the two dozen trails completed over the last 20 years, ones that are underway, and proposed new trails. "Ribbons of Green is such a success. They are one of the best resouces we have, and it's really nice to have a group like that, that's organized and provides good information," Macnabb tells Kiss FM. Board member Victor Cumming says among the society's plans are to pursue a trail along Kalamalka Lake from Vernon to Oyama, along with new trails in the Commonage area. "We still want to get from Vernon to Kal Lake (working on issues with access to complete that), and we want to make the Grey Canal a complete link", he told the board. Cumming says his group is not pushing for new facilities right away. "We should only build these at the speed we can maintain them over the long run," he says. GVAC director and Vernon Mayor Rob Sawatzky says the group's plans are impressive, saying the trails create recreational opportunities for residents, and the potential to draw tourists to the area.
