Fire Model Going Well A Year Later

It's been almost a year since fire services were merged between the downtown and Landing halls. It came after council's controversial decision not to renew its contract with the Okanagan Landing volunteer association. Fire chief Keith Green says changing to the one command structure has worked out well. "From an operational perspective, I think the city of Vernon citizens are served well by our career and volunteer group working together, and that's what it comes down to: people working together to get the job done." Green says around 15 volunteers from the former Landing department ended up joining with Vernon. "One gentleman (volunteer from Landing) told me he's been to more fires in the last 10 months than he's had been to in three years with the Landing, so from an operational standpoint, they get a lot more work." Green says his department currently has 44 volunteer members after recently taking on six new recruits.
