Avenue Market Gets Approval

The Downtown Vernon Association has got a green light to proceed with Friday night markets on 30th Avenue through the summer. Executive director Lara Konkin says "The Avenue Market" will start May 9 in the area from Liquidation World to the old BMO building. "We've got everything. We've got farmers, crafters, and all the downtown businesses will be participating. There will be live entertainment," says Konkin. City council gave its support to closing part of 30th Avenue for the markets after the DVA presented a survey showing more than 90 percent of the businesses in that area support the event. "I was thrilled. It actually came in higher than what we originally polled," Konkin tells Kiss FM. "We were only at about 76 percent originally." Vernon Mayor Rob Sawatzky says council held a special meeting to endorse the plan and allow the closure of part of 30th Avenue for the event. "Council had asked for a clear set of information on a vote, and we we're presented with a very clear and overwhelming support of the project," Sawatzky tells Kiss FM. The markets will continue until the end of September.
