Request To Allow Dogs On Kal Beach

Written by Peter McIntyre 107.5 KISSFM Friday, 06 March 2015 06:00
Should dogs be allowed on Kal Beach in Coldstream between October and May? That's an issue regional district staff will look into after a request from resident Kris Francis who told the Greater Vernon Advisory Committee it's done in other areas, and would provide a safe place to walk dogs over the winter, especially for seniors like her 90 year old mother. GVAC director Mike Macnabb doesn't think it's a good idea at what he calls the area's signature beach. "Not all dog owners pick up after themselves. That's a reality, so now you're going to have a situation where there's going to be an additional cost. There's a public safety issue in terms of disease transmission, so I'm not a big fan of that," Macnabb tells Kiss FM. Director Scott Anderson, who has a couple of dogs himself, says it could lead to problems with dogs on the Kalamalka Lake beach during the summer season, but he also feels the bird droppings left on the sand and pier, are a bigger issue. Francis also feels goose poop is more rampant, and she feels dog owners would hopefully clean-up after their pets. GVAC vice chair Jim Garlick says dogs could lead to health and safety concerns. "Councillor Anderson brought up a good point. It is a slippery slope if you start opening it up, and are beaches the most appropriate places for dogs?" says Garlick.
