Tougher water restrictions have
been implemented for Greater Vernon Water customers. The Regional District of North Okanagan has moved from 'normal' restrictions to 'Stage One,' which calls for increased monitoring of outdoor water use with customers encouraged to reduce usage by 10 percent. Jennifer Miles, Water Sustainability Coordinator, customers are asked to only water when needed. "By being water-wise now, we can avoid greater restrictions.
Most lawns only need water once per week to remain healthy," says Miles. Customers can still water up to three days a week, but are requested to cut back. RDNO staff will be out watching for violations. Miles says Stage 2 restriction, which only allowing water two days a week, could be implemented if conditions remain dry. "We have a decision tree, and it's got a few different factors including the level of reservoirs, the temperature and precipitation forecast, as well as our customer demand," says Miles. Miles says July and August are the peak months for water use, and when reservoir levels can be drawn down considerably. "We have started to go down, and usually we're not going down into our storage until later in July, so we are about a month ahead of schedule from where we would normally like to be."
