Talbot defends spending on travel

Public business means Rene Talbot is on the road a lot. The Falkland director had $14,713 in expenses, according to the Columbia-Shuswap Regional District’s 2014 financial report. “There’s a lot of travelling,” said Talbot. “I was at Fraser Basin committee meetings once a month in Kamloops and at different meetings in Vernon and board meetings in Salmon Arm. It’s 108 kilometres every time I go to Salmon Arm. That chews up mileage pretty quick.” Beyond expenses, Talbot received a remuneration of $26,15 in 2014. “It’s fairly comparable to other directors and is related to how many committees you sit on,” he said. Among the committees he belongs to are milfoil control planning, the North Okanagan-Columbia-Shuswap Regional Hospital District, the Shuswap economic development commission, Shuswap Tourism and the Shuswap water quality program. Talbot insists he needs to be at the various committee tables to ensure the residents of Falkland and the the Salmon River Valley are being represented. “All of these issues affect your community, and if you don’t go, you don’t know what’s going on,” he said. The regional district’s 2014 financial report also highlights remuneration of $3.4 million and $93,594 in expenses for all employees. Leading the pack was chief administrative officer Charles Hamilton, who had a total salary of $169,432 and expenses of $9,004.
