Gas spill shuts down Coldstream Elementary, preschool and municipal office

A large gas spill is causing challenges in the central part of Coldstream. About 5,000 litres of fuel spilled at Coldstream Market just after midnight Tuesday and as a result, Coldstream Elementary, Creekside Montessori Children's School and the Coldstream municipal office are closed. "There's lots of gas fumes and the air intake would suck that into the (elementary school) building," said Joe Rogers, Vernon School District superintendent. The decision to close the schoolsl was made after consulting with the Interior Health Authority and the Ministry of Environment. Kalamalka Road is closed to traffic from Whetzell Drive to Aberdeen Road. The municipal office was supposed to host an advance poll today for the arena referendum. "Advice voters will be redirected to regional district office," said Trevor Seibel, Coldstream chief administrative officer. Advanced voting can also be down at Vernon city hall.
