The fight to get a Vernon RCMP auxiliary constable's name on a national police memorial received another boost, this one from City Hall. Glen Evely was killed in 2004 while on duty. The police cruiser he was travelling in was struck by a stolen car. Evely has been honoured in memorials in Victoria and RCMP headquarters in Regina. But the application to have him recognized at the national memorial for fallen peace officers in Ottawa was denied. When the RCMP appealed, it was denied again. Now Vernon council has unanimously decided to join the fight to get Evely's name where they say it belongs. The City will contact local MP's Colin Mayes and Stockwell Day as well as senior officials with the RCMP. Councillors also plan to send emails to all Members of Parliament, letting them know about the issue.
