Vernon's Top Cop Retires

Vernon will have a new 'top cop' as of next week. The current officer in charge of the Vernon and North Okanagan detachments, Inspector Clair Hayward, announced his intention to retire in a surprise decision Wednesday afternoon.Hayward has been a member of the RCMP for 36 years and a resident of Vernon for the past 10 years. He has been in charge of the detachment since June 2004. Hayward has opted to take owed vacation time leading up to his formal departure date. A new, temporary Officer in Charge has been named by the RCMP’s South East District Commanding Officer. Inspector Steve McVarnock, currently posted to Kelowna Detachment, will assume his new duties Monday, December 10. (Pete McIntyre)
