Reno's to Heritage House Approved (Pete McIntyre) http://www.1075kiss.com/news/headlines/
A heritage house in Vernon's Easthill will be able to make alterations, despite concerns from nearby residents and heritage supporters. Owner Don Butler was given permission to construct a garage and suite, on to the 93 year old house on 28-th Ave. Lindsey Pritchett lives across the street, and voiced his concern to city council. 'We have no objection to the 3 car garage just the suite above it. We're worried about the future use of it, it being split up, people living in there. If there is plumbing in there it wouldn't be too hard to put in a kitchen later on so that's what we're concerned about.' Councillor Juliette Cunningham says despite efforts to preserve heritage, residents will have to accept these types of changes to create more secondary suites, and affordable housing.
New Provincial Park Could be on Horizon (Pete McIntyre)
Vernon city council is leading a initiative to find land for a new provincial park in the area. The city would like to create a park to protect the grassland ecosystem, perhaps in the Commonage, and will now seek partnerships. Councillor Patrick Nicol urges the city to find supporters quickly, as park proposals can take a long time. 'When you look at when they've been establishing the national park in the Osoyoos area and they're still deliberating on that. It takes almost 20 years now to determine on a national park. I don't know what the length of determination will be on a provincial park.' A number of groups including the Allan Brooks Nature Centre, the North Okanagan Naturalist Club and the Grassland Conservation Council, have already expressed support for the idea.
