Emerson visit to focus on aviation

A senior politician is touching down in the North Okanagan and business leaders are confident that will ultimately help bolster the economy. International Trade Minister David Emerson will meet with Vernon-based Northern Sky Aviation at Predator Ridge Golf Resort Thursday.
Northern Sky will make a presentation about its aerospace initiative. “We want to build awareness that in the Okanagan, we are building regional collaboration between the aviation industry and the federal government,” said Curtis Latham, chief executive officer of the company. Northern Sky has had discussions with Emerson in the past, and Latham is impressed with his interest in Vernon. “He’s been trying to provide a more diversified economy in Western Canada,” said Latham. “Aerospace is a major component of that. There is enough cluster of industry here, along with the college, that we could incubate major technology here.” The meeting will also revolve around trying to expand trade with Asia. While here, Emerson will also get together with North Okanagan mayors and regional representatives. That discussion will be about the North Okanagan regional industrial growth strategy and the need for a rail transport facility.
