A surprise guilty plea has been entered by a man accused of the vicious beating of a Vernon senior in August, 2004. Eric Fish was charged with the first-degree murder of 75-year-old Bill Abramenko, but instead has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver. B.C. Supreme Court Justice Bill Smart asked Fish if he understood that because of his past criminal record, the consequence of his guilty plea means he must be sentenced to life in prison with no eligibility of parole for 25 years. Abramenko was killed during a home invasion in Vernon after Fish walked away from the half-way house where he was living after his release from prison on an earlier murder conviction. The killing triggered a furor over the administration of halfway houses in British Columbia and resulted in the closure of Vernon's halfway house.
