Urban Decay- Vernon

Betty Selin, Astral Radio News

A report says the infrastructure across Canada is crumbling and the biggest deficit is recreational and cultural facilities at 40-billion dollars. The national municipal infrastructure deficit is 123-billion dollars, includes 40-billion for recreational and cultural facilities. The report by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities shows roads, bridges and infrastructure are falling apart across the country, but recreational and cultural facilities are the largest deficit areas. Director of Parks for Greater Vernon, Al McNiven, says he can't put a dollar figure on it, but there's no question the Vernon area is lacking tens of millions of dollars in facilities. McNiven says the top three priorities are parks, a museum and art gallery and an arena, because the civic only has a decade left. He says even with declining enrollment, there is an increase in minor hockey registration. McNiven says the pool was upgraded 15-years ago, and a 165-thousand dollar reno is underway at the 40-year-old auditorium.
