Vernon arenas get defibrillators

Through the efforts of the Fantastic Sports Society, three Vernon arenas will be equipped with defibrillators. The society will purchase the defibrillators for the Vernon Multiplex, Civic and Priest Valley arenas. The Funtastic Sports Society made the decision after hearing reports of a Penticton man who was saved with the use of the device during a December 21 hockey game at Memorial Arena in Penticton. "Funtastic board members realized an immediate need for similar life saving equipment for Vernon's arenas," says Funtastic director, Wilfried Mulder. "We have consulted with local officials at the Multiplex and the fire department to ensure units purchased are similar to existing units used by the fire department." The defibrillators come at a cost of about $4,000 each. Funtastic is a non-profit organization that raises funds for the benefit of the community. Over the past 23 years, Funtastic has donated more than $800,000 to help build 13 fields, five playgrounds and assist with numerous non-profit organizations.
