Once hovering on the brink of demolition, the aging Capilano library is bracing itself with an extreme makeover. Starting in March the Edgemont Village library will undergo a much-needed seismic upgrade. But thanks to a $2 million contribution from the federal government, patrons will soon experience a completely modern library. "What this $2 million grant allows us to do is even go a little bit beyond what we hoped to do ... of creating sustainable infrastructure in the District of North Vancouver," said acting District of North Vancouver mayor, Alan Nixon. "This is reuse in the extreme." At a funding announcement on Jan. 24, elected officials praised area residents and local government for their efforts to save the library."This should put to rest the rumours that city hall wants to tear it down," said Ralph Sultan, MLA for West Vancouver-Capilano. "I congratulate the mayor and council for improving this wonderful facility rather than eliminating it."
The upgrade will also create an additional 400 square feet of floor space for the roughly 15,000 square foot building.Construction is scheduled to begin in the spring and wrap up in December. The estimated total cost of the project is $3.8 million with the District of North Vancouver covering the costs beyond the federal grant.

Don Quixote Note:
Looks like the ex editor of the Vernon Daily Courier, Scott Neufeld has reemerged as a reporter with the NORTH SHORE OUTLOOK which ironically is a sister newspaper of the Daily Courier's cross town rival the Vernon Morning Star.
