Is turn-around fair game?

By Ezra Levant on August 2, 2008 excerpts below:

Dean Skoreyko has filed a complaint with the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal against Kenneth Hotz and Showcase TV for their televised stunt of flying a plane past Toronto pulling a giant banner reading "Jesus sucks", pictured at left.

The stunt was part of a television contest to see who could be the most offensive. Hotz claims he originally wanted to have a banner saying "Heil Hitler" or "Guys are stupid", but the airplane banner company refused, saying those messages were too offensive. Apparently "Jesus sucks" isn't. - - - - -

I don't know Skorekyo, but I'm pretty sure he doesn't actually believe that he can get "justice" from the BCHRT. I don't think he wants it. I think he wants the opposite: he wants his case to be thrown out, so that he can prove what we all know to be true. In Canada's human rights industry, only certain political and religious views are protected from hurt feelings -- and Christians aren't one of them. - - - - -

That's why I haven't done what Skoreyko has done, and I don't recommend it. But I rather think he knows his complaint will be dismissed -- and so it won't add to the already overwhelming weight of precedents in HRCs to censor political and religious views in the name of hurt feelings. I think Skoreyko is counting on the opposite happening: for his case to be dismissed summarily, without even a hearing -- as proof that the HRCs are biased and arbitrary, and that they believe in the Animal Farm credo that all animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.

skoreyko is looking for some cheap advertising for his election campaign for Vernon Mayor!

I agree with you, but I believe he is going to let his name stand for council this time around after his unsuccessful run for mayor last election.

Why is Skoreyko putting himself forward for Vernon City Council when he lives in the Coldstream??!!!

This is going to be an election issue

He should run for Coldstrean Council !

The election laws in BC allow a candidate to live in one area and run in another jurisdiction. Pat COCHRANE lives in Coldstream and LIPPERT lives in Area B or C.

Citizens of Vernon would do well to question carefully a candidate for Vernon Council who does not live in the Vernon community and therefore does not have the same perspective as the RESIDENTS and TAXPAYERS of Vernon since the decisions she/he makes do not affect her/him.

The question? Why do you want to make decisions for Vernon's citizens when you will not have to abide by those decisions?

Can anyone please tell me just how many paid up members of the Vernon Tax Payers Association there really are? That question has been asked by many and yet, no one from the taxpayers Association will actually tell us just how much of the community they truly represent.

The Taxpayers' Association is a grassroots organisation of like minded citizens who meet and discuss issues of concern and take action when it becomes necessary

They do not have to give their numbers to anyone nor is it relevant

It's a free country!

Their numbers is not the issue

The issue is 'the proof of the pudding is in the eating'!

They are obviously doing something right!
The results speak for themselves

Over 70% agreed with the Taxpayers Association position on their Alternate Approval position as they did for the referendum and over 180000 agreed with the Taxpayers Association on the Hospital issue!

The Taxpayers'Association obviously reflects the main stream in Vernon and Districts as opposed say to the fringe positions taken by mayor and some councillors!

So I suppose it is fair to conclude that some local politicians and their supporters have something to learn from the Vernon & Districts Taxpayers' Association

The sooner the better!

The last time a councillor showed disrespect to the Vernon & District Taxpayers'Association was Cllr Juliette Cunningham when she dismissed them in the press as representing no more than fifty people because she was not impressed by the attendance at some of their meetings!

She got her reply at the referendum which was 70+% against her position on the Civic Complex

This association of taxpayers looks like it is here to stay and growing

Perhaps a better question would be: how many people agree with the leadership Vernon Council is providing?

The responses to their alternate approval process and the referendum indicate that they need to learn something and the time is short.

Vernon need leadership that is balanced and not working just in the developers favour.

To Anonymous who wants to be told how many paid up members the Vernon and Districts Taxpayers'Association has I have a suggestion

Did you not enjoy Robin Hood and his Merry Men and Maids when you were a kid??

When you watched Errol Flynn or Richard Green giving hell to the bad barons and their crooked money grubbing schemes on the backs of the overtaxed citizenry- were you particularly concerned about the 'paid up members 'of that band??

I suggest not
You simply enjoyed the good folk giving the villlains their just rewards!!??

So if it might help you understand the nature and scope of this wonderful Taxpayers'Adventure think of them as
The GREAT ADVENTURE OF THE MERRY MAIDS AND MEN OF VERNON AND DISTRICTS [INCLUDING COLDSTREAM]!!!

in the pursuit of OPENNESS ACCOUNTABILITY AND TRANSPARENCY!

Wouldn't it be nice, if the above author's were to practice what they write. "OPENESS, ACCOUNTABLITLY AND TRANSPARENCY".

If the foregoing writers are so resolute in their opinions, why can't they sign their names to same?

Unfortunately, it would appear that the Vernon Tax Payers although they preach Openess and Transparency, but when posed with a mere question about membership, the response is a flurry of defensive retorts...

What would they be so worried about? It would seem that if they report to represent the majority of tax payers, then their membership should reflect that.

The rumor is that they will field a slate of candidates during the upcoming election..I would most certainly think there will be a number of pointed questions directed to thier candidates..The last thing we need is another special interest group trying to control the agenda of our City.

To "Robin HOOD"

I rarely if ever, provide comments to Blogs and I draw great enjoyment from reading Mr QUIXOTE's web site.

Notwithstanding, I've read the correspondence attached to this article and have become somewhat concerned that a reader asks a simple, but valid question in so far as an association's membership. On the surface, a very harmless question.

In response, instead of a responsible answer, they get replies wherein the writer continually draws reference to the Vernon Rate Payers as being a group of "Fairy tale characters" (Robin Hood and his merry men).

To any reasonable and responsible person, that's very concerning. To suggest that we should allow or even remotely consider allowing a group who use the anology or believe, they're fairy tale characters run a multi-million dollar operation in the City of Vernon, is remiss. It's something I know I will remember and pass onto to my associates (including the media as I've printed of your replies) when considering my support for a candidate for the upcoming municipal election.

Good luck "Robin Hood" as Im sure the handlers for the potential candidates representing the Vernon Rate Payers will really appreciate your comments.

To "Anonymous":

Your question is valid and it's something I think we as the voting public are entitled to know, especially, if "Robin HOOD and his merry men" want to run the CIty of Vernon.

And to Mr.Down..I tip my hat to you and good on you for your comments!!!

Mr QUIXOTE:

Thanks for a great job you're doing on your Web Site

To those who have not a modicum of humour or the ability to understand simple English suck it up

This is a democracy and people can choose to be what they like or to express themselves in any creative way they wish

The reason the United Kingdom is the land of satire and the great Chaucerian traditions of story telling is that it is an island that encourages irreverance and wicked humour

Something that enriches the spirit and the soul

Two writers tried to clarify simple points to the overexcited writer with an obvious axe to grind towards the very successful Taxpayer organisation to no avail

This column -just as a reminder- is about skoreyko- who runs at every election - and who is too thin skinned to appreciate the idea of free speech and irreverence it would seem
-
Not about the TAXPAYERS'ASSOCIATION which is the best thing that has happened to Vernon since the Harvey scandals -a fact corroborated by over 70% of the Vernon Citizens

So I vote for Robin Hood and his merry maids and men
Robin Hooooood

PS-ROBIN HOOD is not 'a fairy tale'
IT IS A LEGEND !

To the educated, Robin Hood is a myth about an outlaw of Bernsdale and Sherwood.

Anonymous said...

Robin Hood was a legend for good that fought the corrupt establishment of grasping ripoff wretches who stole the unsuspecting citizens [and still do] blind!

That is what he is to the 'Educated'!

Had the Robin Hood factor been at play when Harvey was around it would have saved the citizens of Vernon thousands of stolen dollars!

Anyone who has a 'problem' with the Robin Hood values is most suspect

Robin Hoooood for Ever!
