Fire Plan Debate

Jeff_Carlisle Vernon's hotly debated fire service plan will go before city council for discussion on Monday. Fire chief Jeff Carlisle says the elected reps will be considering his request to improve emergency response times, and one part of that would be adding paid firefighters in Okanagan Landing. Carlisle tells KISS FM, "That's council's decision. The implementation is based on resource allocation and that will be council's discretion at when that occurs and if it occurs." While there's been a lot of discussion about the Landing, Carlisle says that's just one recommendation aimed at providing equitable fire service through-out the city. "What we've done here is we've got a number of performances measures for council to approve, and its up to their discretion when they implement them." The proposed change in the Landing has created a firestorm of public and firefighter debate. Supporters say it will improve response times to emergency incidents while opponents says it's costly and unnecessary given the exemplary job the Landing Volunteer Department has done the last 24 years. The Fire Rescue Service Policy will be fore council for debate at Monday's committee of the whole meeting at 8:40am
