Last Day

Monday was RCMP Supertintendant Steve McVarnock's last day at the Vernon detachment. McVarnock says there are a several things he's proud of in his two and a half years in Vernon. He says he also believes the downtown area is safer but that will continue to be a work in progress. McVarnock is leaving Vernon to become Chief Superintendent and Commanding officer for the RCMP's 'V' division in Nunavut. Kelowna's Inspector Reg Burgess will fill in for the next few months until another Superintendent is chosen.

McVarnock, served three RCMP tours in the Northwest Territories, time in Sydney, Nova Scotia, and also did a stint with the RCMP’s famed Musical Ride. He also served time as a Canadian peacekeeper in Kosovo in 1999 and 2000.

Vernon's Top Cop Retires

Vernon will have a new 'top cop' as of next week. The current officer in charge of the Vernon and North Okanagan detachments, Inspector Clair Hayward, announced his intention to retire in a surprise decision Wednesday afternoon.Hayward has been a member of the RCMP for 36 years and a resident of Vernon for the past 10 years. He has been in charge of the detachment since June 2004. Hayward has opted to take owed vacation time leading up to his formal departure date. A new, temporary Officer in Charge has been named by the RCMP’s South East District Commanding Officer. Inspector Steve McVarnock, currently posted to Kelowna Detachment, will assume his new duties Monday, December 10. (Pete McIntyre 107.5 KISSFM)
