No Tax Hike In Spallumcheen/ Lumby Taxes Up 1.9%

Glen Morrison Tuesday, 02 March 2010 12:29 107.5 KISSFM:

There's good news for Spallumcheen residents. The township will have no tax increase this year, and there will still be infrastructure work done. Mayor Wil Hansma says the 2010 budget's been adopted. "He tells KISS FM, "Our revenue is going to stay the same. We recognize there are a lot of people who find themselves strapped (financially) right now, and so we're using some of our reserves to offset any increase." Hansma says this doesn't mean a halt in projects as they'll be using some surpluses from projects that came in under budget, to keep going. One of those will be a six figure revamping of the municipality's gravel roads.

Lumby residents aren't as lucky as those in Spallumcheen.. their taxes are going up. The village council has passed the 2010 budget on a 3-2 vote giving a 1.9 percent increase. Mayor Kevin Acton says they did put some money into reserves.. "Not as much as I would have liked to have seen, but the public really isn't in any mood for a tax increase this year, and they made that very clear, so the fact that we put any into reserves at all, was a tough choice." Acton says it works out to about $13.14 extra for the average home-owner.
